University at Albany graduate Harvey Milk will be the first member of the LGBTQ+ MOGII community to be honored by the navy.
“The acceptance of the LGBT community has come a long way in the past few years. That’s a tremendous development and Harvey is responsible for that shift because he was a pioneer,” said Mark Berger, a classmate of Milk. “The fact that the military is naming a ship after him is the most remarkable development of all.”
Milk kept his sexual orientation disclosed during his years at UAlbany. During college, he was active in student government and athletics. Milk graduated in 1951 at what was then the New York State College for Teachers, prior to being commissioned by the navy.
